Some of them questioned pope's authority, other simply quitted their positions. The church leaders demanded a solution against the reformation. That is why the council of Trent was held between  1545 and 1563 in Trent, Italy, to issue all the matters regarding the protestant reformation and how to deal with them, something that would be called the beginning of the Catholic Counter-Reformation.
