Many Americans were angered by Andrew Jackson’s policy of forced removal of American Indians from their land. Take the position of one such American in 1839 and write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper, protesting the removal of the Cherokees from their land to the new Indian Territory in present day Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. This journey became known as the Trail of Tears. In your letter: (Must be 5 paragraphs in length)

- Describe the physical and emotional hardships the Cherokee Indian tribe faced during the removal

- Include one eyewitness report of what you observed during the journey

- Include arguments designed to persuade the president to change his policy.
