Manifest Destiny was a movement in the mid-1800s that believed that it was the divine destiny of the United States to extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. The United States had been slowly gaining land over the years, but Manifest Destiny accelerated the process significantly. U. S. President James K. Polk is most associated with completing Manifest Destiny, gaining additional land, piece by piece until Manifest Destiny had been achieved.
A - The original 13 colonies of the United States
B - The land gained during the American Revolution
C - Louisiana Purchase (1803) - purchased by U. S. President Thomas Jefferson from the French
D - Florida (1819) - The Adams-Onis Treaty included the purchase of Florida from Spain, and the finalization of the eastern border of Texas.
E - Texas (1845) - Annexed in 1845 by the United States, much of this territory was disputed by Mexico. Annexation this territory would contribute to the beginning of the Mexican-American War.
F - Oregon (1846) - The Oregon territory had been disputed with the British for decades, the Oregon Treaty of 1846 ended the dispute, setting a clear border between the U. S. Oregon and British Canada.
G - Mexican Cession (1848) - Land won from Mexico after the United States won the Mexican-American War.
H - Gadsden Purchase (1854) - Purchased from Mexico with the sole purpose of building a transcontinental railroad crossing the entire United States.
