Why is the study of prehistoric and ancient music important? what can we learn from it?

We know that our very primitive ancestors had musical tastes not too far out of line from ours 
In the caves at Lascaux, where all the art is, they found bone flutes which when reproduced were found to play a pentatonic scale... You could play modern tunes on them. 
Of interest to anthropologists Were these ceremonial items? Were they played for enjoyment? 
What function did music have in these very primitive societies? 
We may never know for sure.
