To what degree are colleges and universities justified in trying to discipline students who engage in such speech? ​

This is a very slippery road to travel down. While I don’t agree with the slurs and general hate speech directed at races, religions, genders or sexual orientations, hindering speech is a violation of the constitution. Colleges and Universities are typically private sector and can set some of their own standards. They also open themselves up to potential lawsuits, but that’s another story. I don’t believe we should set boundaries on freedom of expression as long as it doesn’t go beyond that. There are harassment laws in place and if someone is excessively oppressing another there are protections there.
