How do the ancient systems of writing differ from the way words are written today

Sometimes people used patterns and symbols, art and pictures, sometimes it was just gibberish written on walls.

Ancient writing systems were typically simple, and only began to evolve over time. Many ancient writing systems relied on pictograms, which is less practiced today. Scattered scrawls of eras past have since turned into the complex and widely accepted alphabets of the present.
