Appeasement, at least in the context of WWII, was a tactic used by the Allies in which they let Hitler take more and more land as long as he promised to not take anymore. It was essentially the Allies going "you can have this, but no more" over and over in an attempt to avoid war. This was ineffective because they never introduced a sort of punishment if Hitler were to take more land. Essentially, they were letting him take land with little to no fight. It's now generally regarded as a sign of weakness and cowardice.
