Zoo officials in Eureka, California, could not afford to house two healthy adult bears while a new bear grotto was being built, and the only zoo that would take the bears was in South Dakota. Because the zoo could not afford the $500 it would have cost to transport the bears, officials decided to destroy them. As their two 3-month-old cubs looked on, the bears were given lethal shots of sodium phenobarbital.10 Was the bears’ destruction a moral issue? If so, was the action morally wrong?
