In 1973, as a result of support from a few influential African American business leaders and his growing popularity with African American voters, Maynard Jackson decided to run for mayor. Although he was just thirty-five, he became the first African American mayor of a large Southern city. He won the race with almost 60 percent of the vote. Jackson is best known for improving opportunities for African Americans to do business with the City of Atlanta . . . . In his first year as mayor, he appointed twelve whites and fifteen blacks to head city departments and agencies, and African Americans made up 80% of new city hires. In addition, African American businesses were singled out to receive contracts with the City of Atlanta.
