The study of the Pueblo peoples demonstrates more vividly than most the vital connection between the environment and its inhabitants. This is due to the fact that their very religion and philosophy of life are dedicated to preserving a state of balance with the land. Edward Abbey has long been respected as a staunch defender of “The Great American Desert.” Describe some of the dangers to which he alludes and indicate why all of these warnings are “tongue in cheek.” Two of the most poignant reports to come out of the Southwest are “The Blue Lake Story” and “The Salt Woman and the Coal Mine.” Explain the positions of the Taos and Zuni Pueblos in relation to the Federal Government and private enterprise. “In the Light of Reverence” deals with the destruction of the land, both by those who would sap its precious supply of water and by those who wantonly destroy sacred sites.
