in 1939, acclaimed jazz singer Billie Holiday performed "Strange Fruit," a slow ballad written by Abel Meeropol
originally as a poem about racism. There are some lines in the song addressing the depressing tragedies that happened
during this time due to racism and segregation. For example, Billie Holiday sings, "blood on the leaves and blood at the
root", "black body swinging", and "sudden smell of burning flesh”. The poem or song is about an African American
being hung and burned. Abel Mepropol describes this tragedy in the song as a, "pastoral scene”. The tone of the song is
very depressing and emotional. This song was created to inform people of the emotions brought on from these painful
tribulations
