25 POINTS: Russia has thousands of miles of coastline, more than any other country. Why does Russia have very few large port cities? 1. Most of the coastline isn’t deep enough to support oceangoing ships, so can’t be used for ports.

2. Russia doesn’t have many trading partners near to its coastline, so it focuses more on sea trading.

3. The leaders of Russia only use the coastline as a place of exile, so there are no large ports there.

4. Most of the coastline lies on the Arctic Ocean, which is ice-bound at least 6 months of the year.
