Where are presidential and vice-presidential candidates are nominated

The Republican and Democratic Party choose their candidates. When there are only two candidates left and the election is almost there, the candidates from both sides will choose a running mate. If the Republican or Democratic candidate wins 272 or more electoral votes, the president who picked their running mate, will become elected Vice President.

So they can help the president in stuff like that.
