Why were the Westerners forced to find another route to reach Asia?​

It increased competition because because other European nations began looking for their own water route to Asia; they wanted to take part in the profitable trade.Because they were interested by the idea of being rich since trading with Asia would give them wealth. Also they wanted to spread christianity.
