The Spartans believed in hard work, continuously preparing for war and never giving up. Sparta was founded around the 9th century BCE and their kings did not see much interest in focusing on art, music, or language. Religion was important but only because they believed their military forces deserved worship. Each summer, Sparta held festivities to celebrate the military and it was considered rude and offensive to not participate.
