Define imperialism. How does this concept go against nationalism?

Imperialism is when a nation has the desire to expand their economy, wealth, power, land, resources etc. by exerting control over other territories and people. An example of why it goes against nationalism would be Canada. If Canada were to go to war for imperialism and use the conscription law, it would go against its civic nationalism where many Canadians root for the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
