In the years following the first and second Arab-Israeli wars, unresolved and mounting tensions resulted in a number of violent exchanges along the Israel-Syria border. Conflict returned in 1967 with the Six-Day War. Concerned that Israel was mobilizing forces against its Arab neighbors, Egypt prepped its own military for defense. A signed agreement between a number of Arab states prompted Israeli leaders to preemptively strike Egypt. Israel won against Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq. During this war, Israel took over land that the UN had set aside for an Arab state. They also obtained some land that Egypt and Syria had taken in the previous war. Following Israel’s victory in the Six-Day War, the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) gained recognition and support as a representative organization for the Palestinian agenda. Yasser Arafat took over the organization in 1969. Under his leadership, the PLO waged guerilla warfare against Israel.
