The main cause was the World War I Peace Treaty, the Treaty of Versailles. The Treaty of Versailles is responsible for World War II for a number of reasons including, providing false hope, pushing things too far, the cause of German reparations, redrawn boundaries, and the creation of weaker nations.

It provided a lot of false hope and pushed things too far.  The Germans were punished way too harshly as well. By harming the Germans so much,  it began to contribute to the social, political, and economical environment that gave rise to the Nazi party. Then, Germans started cheating very quickly, building submarines in the Netherlands and tanks in Russia, along with "civil" planes that were double-use capable.

This treaty did way more harm than good. It put Germany into a perfect climate for a dictator to rise (Hitler).  Germans found this treaty to be an insult and a burden after WWI. By forcing Germany to bare the price of the war, it gave rise to extremists groups, such as Nazism, that pushed to a more aggressive militaristic policy, causing the second world war.
