PROJECT: SCIENTISTS AND INVENTORS
There has been a huge amount of technological progress made in the last 100 years. Just think, 100 years ago, there was no television; many homes didn't even have a radio. Many scientists and inventors led the way to the technological revolution that we are currently living in.

What makes someone a scientist or an inventor, though?

Scientists seek to explain how the world works. They conduct research and experiments to test a hypothesis. Their work seeks to change the way we understand the world around us.

Inventors focus on bringing an idea to reality; they do this by creating an original invention. Inventors contribute to society's progress by creating applicable ways to complete a process, such as with technological devices or chemical compounds.

OBJECTIVES
Identify the contributions of significant scientists and inventors.
Read and comprehend historical/social studies texts.
Analyze in detail a series of events described in a text, and determine whether earlier events caused later ones or simply preceded them.
Compare and contrast treatments of the same topic in several primary and secondary sources.
Design an effective slide-show presentation of your research using multiple forms of media.
Before You Begin
For this project, you will be creating a multimedia presentation about one of the following scientists or inventors:

Marie Curie
Thomas Edison
Albert Einstein
Louis Pasteur
James Watt
In order to create your presentation, you will first need to conduct research to gather the information. You will be required to read one, full-length literary nonfiction text about one of the above figures, as your central source. Literary nonfiction is a type of text that incorporates elements of literature as well as factual information. Essentially, it is a factually accurate story that incorporates literary elements like figurative language and literary style. In that way, it is different from strictly informational nonfiction texts, such as textbooks or encyclopedias.

One suggestion is to read a short autobiography or biography based on your selected historical figure. After you have selected the literary nonfiction text you will read, check in with your teacher to get the text approved.

In addition to the literary nonfiction text, you will also need one additional source. This source will be either a primary or a secondary source.

Primary sources are firsthand accounts of an event, original sources of information that were created at the time an event occurred. Primary sources may include autobiographies, artifacts, diaries, letters, treaties, speeches, song lyrics, poems, photographs, recordings, and newspaper articles.
Secondary sources contain the analysis and evaluation of a collection of information; secondary sources use a variety of information to draw a conclusion about a historical event. Secondary sources are often written by people who have studied primary sources and wish to share their conclusions. Examples of secondary sources include books, biographies, journal articles, and models built based on evidence collected
