The Indian Removal Act was signed by Andrew Jackson and the act became a law on May 28, 1830. It authorized the president for settling the lands which were on the west of Mississippi in exchange for the Indian lands which were within state borders. Some tribes relocated peacefully but many resisted the policy. During 1838 and 1839, the US government forced the Cherokee tribe to move west. The march came to be known as Trail of Tears and at least 4000 Cherokee people died during the march.
