Athen was a patriarcal society which means that women were subjected to men in different ways. Their roles were limited to "wife" and "mother", therefore their duty was to take care of the house issues and the children basic education. Athenian women weren't allowed to do business unless the money was used to feed their family, in other words, buy groseries; all this with the permission of the husband. The only way they could adquire property was by gifts, dowry or inheritance.  They were not allowed to vote as they were not full citizens.
