The state of the union address is the most important annual speech given by the president of the united states. briefly outline the history and purpose of the speech.

We can find the basis of the State of the Union adress in the U.S. Constitution because the U.S. President shall from time to time give information of the State of the Union to the Congress and ask for their consideration in some matters. Over time the meaning of the adress has changed in the beggining it covered the economic situation of the country. Also it was called Annual Message from 1790 to 1946. Since 1947 it's been called like we know it nowadays.
