Louis XIV reigned during a time of political, economic and social turmoil in France. The population was poor and in hunger at the same time that Louis made France spend money on many wars around the world and spend money with luxury. When Cardinal Mazarin died - he was France’s Prime Minister - Louis wanted to remain the sole ruler of France, he called himself the Sun King.  This attempt to be a tyrannical ruler was also one of the reasons for the break out of the French Revolution.
