Richard Nixon was an American politician who became the 37th President of the United States of America.

He won the presidential elections of 1968 and 1972, remaining in office from January 1969 to August 1974 when he resigned following the Watergate scandal. Among his policies were the progressive withdrawal from the Vietnam war in favor of bombing, diplomacy and secret war; opening to China in an anti-Soviet perspective and in search of new market outlets; anti-communism and corporate freedom; partial support for civil rights in particular in the fight against segregationism; the prohibition escalation towards soft drugs; and the institutionalization of the first environmental policies and the search for a comprehensive reform of health care that maintained the fundamental role of private companies rather than the public sector. His presidency also supported the coup d'etat in Chile that ousted the government of Salvador Allende and brought Augusto Pinochet to power.

He was the only US president to resign from office. His resignation took place on August 9th 1974, to anticipate the imminent impeachment following the Watergate scandal. Richard Nixon remains one of the most controversial presidents in US history.
