Slavery had been used by many civilizations way before the discovery of America  by the Europeans. A person could become a slave when his/her city was taken over by another civilization. Most of the male war prisioners turned into cheap workforce for tough activities like mining and building while the female ones turned into servants for more domestic tasks. The same went for America, however there was a diffrence and it was that slavery was race-based. A race Hierarchy was made by conquerors with the Europeans at the top of the structure and indigenous, Africans  and mixed races below them. That concept of European supremacy allow them to slave the other races according to the hierarchy. Africans were the most exploited, followed by indigenous while mixed raced experienced more or less slavery depending on how close they were related to Europeans.  Slavery in America was based entirely on race.
