What private roles did women carry out within the home?

Historically, women were mostly expected to take care of the house and raise children. This included jobs like cleaning and cooking. There are many historians who believe that this is a direct consequence of the agricultural revolution. It was common in the middle and lower classes because the wealthy could usually pay servants to do it instead of them.
