The Compromise of 1850 was a series of bills passed by Congress in September 1850. It was designed to end the political conflict between slave and free states over the territories acquired during the Mexican-American War. Among other things, it banned the slave trade (although not the institution of slavery) in the District of Columbia.

Although it reduced this conflict, it also allowed the Fugitive Slave Law to be strengthened. After the Compromise of 1850, the Supreme Court made slavery a protected institution. It also arranged laws so that slavery was allowed in new territories.
