The Sharpeville Massacre occurred on March 21, 1960. A crowd of about 5,000-7,000 protesters went to the police station of the South African town of Sharpeville, protesting segregation laws and the use of passbooks. The South African police killed 69 people, and injured 180 others.  March 21 is now celebrated as a public holiday in South Africa in memory of the massacre.
