With Soviet nuclear warheads already positioned to strike the America, the world feared that it could be the brink of a third world war. With the Cuban Missile Crisis going on, the United States and the Soviet Union got in tense relationship in Octobre 1962. The issue was the installation of nuclear-armed Soviet missiles on Cuba, it was located 90 miles from the US shores.

President J. Kennedy notified the US population that they were prepared to use military force if necessary to put an end to the threat to the national security. Therefore, people feared a nuclear war could begin.

Fortunately, the US promised not to invade Cuba and removed its missiles.

Later, when Cuba was governed by Fidel Castro, the country aligned with the Soviet Union . Cuba grew thanks to the economic and military help of the Soviets. During this time, the United States and the Soviet Union got engaged in the Cold War (1945-91).
