The Petition of Right confirmed the supremacy of Law over the Crown.

In 1628, Petition of Right, a statement of civil liberties, was sent by the English Parliament to Charles I - king of England, Scotland, and Ireland who ruled between Charles I, 1600–1649.

Because the parliament had refused to his unpopular foreign policy, the King had caused his government to exact forced loans and to quarter troops in subjects' houses as an economy measure.

He made several arbitrary arrest and imprisoned a lot of people.

This stirred up a lot of anger and hostility in the parliament who retaliated with The Petition of Right. The Petition was  initiated by Sir Edward Coke.

The petition demanded the following:

In return for his acceptance (June, 1628), Charles was granted subsidies. Although the petition was of importance as a safeguard of civil liberties, its spirit was soon violated by Charles, who continued to extort tonnage and poundage duties without Parliament's authorization and to prosecute citizens in an reckless manner.
