Historically, the Tuareg have significantly contributed to the spread of Islam.

Secondly, the Tuaregs started a rebellion 2012 due to marginalization in terms of both economic and social aspects, which finished with the unilateral declaration of independence of a territory located in the North of the Republic of Mali, named Azawad. Such independence has not been recognized by any country in the international spheres. A year later, in 2013, that territory rejoined Mali.
