How did democrats regain control of southern governments from the republican party?

I believe it was because the Republicans lost much support due to many of their scandals in office (this was when Ulysses Grant was president). I can't be very sure because the answer may depend on what time period you're talking about. :) I apologize if I am incorrect (or misunderstood the question) in advance, though.
