Yalaluddin Muhammad Akbar, was a ruler of the Mughal Empire from 1556 to 1605. He is considered the greatest of the Mughal emperors.

Akbar was born in Urmakot. He was the son of Humayun and Hamida Begun. His father was expelled from the throne of India after a series of decisive battles against the Afghan Sher Shah Suri. After more than 12 years of exile, Humayun regained the throne although it was a few months before his death in 1556. Akbar succeeded him the same year, under the regency of Bairam Khan, a nobleman who dedicated himself to repelling the different suitors to the throne and who knew how to maintain order and discipline within the army. Once order was restored, Akbar took over the reins of government in March 1560.

He expanded the Mughal empire including Malwa (1562), Gujarat (1572), Bengal (1574), Kabul (1581) and Kandesh (1601). Akbar installed governors in the conquered provinces that came under his authority. In 1568 the famous siege of Chitor took place.

Akbar did not want his court to be too close to the city of Delhi. He ordered that he move to the city of Fatehpur Sikri, near Agra, but this site became unviable (due to lack of water).
