The Progressive Era was the outcome of a newfound moral, political, social and economic consciousness among the general citizens of the United States. The  political situation during the early years of the 19th century necessitated the rethinking of some of the social provisions and  rules that regulated the lives of American citizens, for example, the constant exclusion of women from the democratic processes of elections and subsequently, denying them the identity of being an American citizen, along with their male counterparts. The idea of female suffrage was envisioned to introduce a radical change in the composition of American society and attempted to reduce the huge gender gap in terms of opportunities available to both sexes. Another important consequence that changed the scenario of politics and election was that of ‘direct democracy’, which meant that the general American citizens would have the right to choose their representatives directly, by voting for the candidate of their choice. With women being granted suffrage, the elections were truly democratic in nature, with all sections of society being given fair representation.

The general consensus among the Americans was that the Progressive Movement made significant social and religious reforms.  However, the Progressive movement did not make any significant headways with respect to religion.
