The United States constitutes a federal constitutional republic, with a presidential regime as a form of government based on the separation of powers in three branches: executive, legislative and judicial. The President concentrates all the executive power, since he is at the same time Head of Government and Head of State.

The Executive Branch is composed of the President, the Vice President, the President's Cabinet composed of the 15 Secretaries of Departments, the Office of the President and the independent agencies of the Government (such as the CIA, the FBI or the FDA).

The President must be over 35 years old, must have been born in the United States and have lived in the country for at least fourteen years. Its power is restricted to two periods of four years each and its main functions and responsibilities are:  

-To perform as Head of Government, Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

-To appoint magistrates of the Supreme Court and judges of minor federal courts, all subject to ratification by the Senate.

-To designate a cabinet of department secretaries and agency heads that must also be confirmed by the Senate.

-To appoint the heads of more than 50 independent federal commissions, such as the Federal Reserve Board or the Securities and Exchange Commission, as well as ambassadors and other federal offices.

-To enforce federal laws.

-Power of signature and veto of bills approved by Congress, although this chamber may nullify a veto with the vote of two thirds of Congress and Senate.

-Ability to issue executive orders.

-Power to negotiate international treaties and with Native American tribes, which must be ratified by two thirds of the Senate.

-Power to grant pardons and temporary suspensions of execution of the sentence for federal crimes (except condemned by impeachment).
