Farmers were an important necessity before, but the sad truth is that the lands of New England were not fit for farming. However, the lands had rivers and creeks that were a potential water-power that shed some light for the industrial revolution.The factory system was in New England because the efficiency increases when the manufacturing steps were brought together.  And one of the rich resources that you could find in New England would be textiles and cotton.
