Muhammad Ahmad ibn as Sayyid abd Allah, also known as The Mahdi or Muhammad Ahmed al Mahdi was a Muslim religious leader of the Egyptian Sudan. After gathering enough followers, Muhammad Ahmad proclaimed to be the Mahdi so long awaited by the Muslims. Under their religious authority the clans of Baqqarah united to form an alliance that aimed to establish an Islamic republic as a prelude to a world Islamic state. Muhammad Ahmed declared a jihad, and led his army to a religious war aimed at ending the Ottoman and Egyptian occupation. His main opponent was General Charles George Gordon, whom he defeated and killed in the siege of Khartoum. His troops would get several more victories (Kassala, Sennar ...).
