Joseph McCarthy was an American Republican senator from the state of Wisconsin from 1947 to 1957. During his ten years in the Senate, McCarthy and his team were made famous for their research on people in the government of the United States and others suspected of being Soviet agents or sympathizers of communism infiltrated in the public administration or the army.  

He remained a little-known character until in February 1950 he launched a public accusation against 205 alleged communists infiltrated in the Department of State. Although he did not participate in the work of the Un-American Activities Committee, a body dependent on the House of Representatives and whose activity dates back to the late 1940s and early 50s, it was its organizer and main promoter.
