Describe the role of patrons in renaissance art and literature.

The patrons were generally wealthy individuals who paid an artist to make a certain painting and/or funded the artist to continue doing work. A great way to think about it is that if you pay someone to make a portrait of your family, you are their patron. Without patrons, much of the famous art we know and love today would be nonexistant.
