What has led historians to begin studying the idea of an atlantic world?

From what I have read so far, the Atlantic world is just another name for the British slave trade that happened in the 19th century, even though it was banned in 1807. According to my sources, it seems the Atlantic World history was influenced the American colonies, which in turn helped to start colonies in Africa and other countries.
