How did the Soviets and Americans react to the Nazi death camps?

When the camps were discovered, both Soviet and US troops weren’t sure of what they were seeing. There were hundreds of basically walking skeletons walking around. Some were clothed—in mostly filthy rags— while others wore nothing. Were these people suffering from some disease like TB? They all looked dazed, bewildered, and confused. They were also stunned to the camps absent of German soldiers. They also noticed the awful stench which hung over the area.

It was said that the Soviet troops, upon entering Auschwitz in January 1945, all broke down and cried at what they saw (Soviet troops had earlier liberated Majdanek, outside Lublin in Poland in July 1944). General George Patton, ole “Blood and Guts” himself, was said to have thrown up after what he saw. General Eisenhower was visibly sickened and absolutely furious.
