Why has the textile industry in South Carolina seen a decline in recent years? Factory owners have been unwilling to invest in new technologies that would
make the mills more competitive.
Consumers have been opting for synthetic, or man-made, materials instead of
the natural fibers produced in textile mills.
The prices of cotton and linen have been increasing drastically, raising costs for
textile manufacturers in South Carolina.
Many textile companies have been leaving the state because of more relaxed
regulations and less government oversight overseas.
