La contaminación ambiental es el resultado del uso indiscriminado de los combustibles fósiles.

Estos combustibles fósiles como el petróleo o el gas, producen altas emisiones de dióxido de carbono, sustancia que contamina el aire y envenena el medio ambiente.

Las actividades económicas que producen contaminación son precisamente la extracción y refinación del petróleo. Esta industria, junto con la extracción de gas, producen una alta cantidad de contaminantes del aire y son causa de lo que hoy se conoce como el "efecto invernadero" que produce el calentamiento global y el cambio climático.

Las soluciones que están más a la mano para detener la contaminación del medio ambiente son las siguientes.

Hay que dejar de contaminar el medio ambiente reduciendo el consumo de los combustibles fósiles como el petróleo y el gas. Dejar de usar el automóvil y usar más la bicicleta o caminar, que es lo más saludable para el humano.

Otras acciones importantes son Prohibir la tala indiscriminada de árboles. Dejar de contaminar los mantos acuíferos con tantos desechos industriales. Las fábricas tiran sus desperdicios en los ríos y lagos, contaminando el agua limpia. Los gobiernos deben aplicar elevadas multas a las industria contaminantes.

Otra alternita viable es el uso de energías limpias y renovables, como son los casos de la energía eólica(viento) y la energía solar (paneles solares).
