Like most immigrants that came before them, early 20th century immigrants came to better their lives.

In Europe, many left their homelands in search of economic prosperity and religious freedom.

Living conditions in Europe were degraded, as poverty and an exploding European population led to food shortages.

the conditions that made the byzantine empire vulnerable to attacks by the muslin turks were the sack of constantinople by western crusaders, the conquests of the sultanate of rum, presence of rival kingdoms and finally the set up of fiefdoms at the empire which were owned by the ghazis (turkish warriors).
