In the Spanish-American War of 1898, Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States in exchange for peace. This triggered more than ten years of conflict between the US military and the First Republic of the Philippines under the leadership of President Emilio Aguinaldo. The U. S. military committed crimes during the crossing of Samal Island, which led to a military court trial and the mandatory retirement of Brigadier General Jacob H. Smith.
