How did Lincoln immediately respond to the Southern states seceding? He asked Congress to amend the Constitution including a clause that made secession illegal. He stated that secession would weaken the country and make it a target for foreign attacks. He stated that the Constitution created a "perpetual Union" and could not be dissolved. He asked Congress to pass a law making secession in any form unconstitutional.
