What was not a result of the innovations in transportation in the early 1800s? New towns were founded and existing towns and cities grew in size. Trade on rivers began moving in both directions — both upstream and downstream. The cost of transporting goods, and subsequently the cost of the goods themselves, dropped. Trade with Europe declined as Americans began to trade exclusively between themselves.
