Respond to the following phrase "United we stand, divided we fall." This motto has resonated in the United States since the American Revolution and experienced a rise in usage during the Civil War, World War II and after 9/11, all times of great stress on the country. Another adage encourages the building of bridges rather than walls, and that is another way of describing unity. What actions were Americans taking to actively go against this phrase during the build up of the civil war?
