El mercado de Otavalo El mundialmente reconocido mercado de artesanías de los sábados, en Otavalo, es uno de los más famosos en toda la región andina. Los tejedores indígenas (indigenous weavers) que habitan en los pueblos (towns) cerca de Otavalo se encuentran entre los más talentosos de Ecuador. Los otavaleños, ingeniosos para adaptar sus productos a las demanadas del mercado, han ganado (have gained) no solo reconocimiento internacional sino también prosperidad. El mercado de los sábados es el más grande y famoso del Ecuador, pero cualquier (any) día de la semana es posible comprar en el laberíntico mercado de artesanías de la Plaza de Los Ponchos. Entre los artículos más importantes se cuentan telas exquisitamente tejidas (woven fabrics), ponchos de lana, sombreros, suéteres tejidos a mano, mantas (blankets), bufandas, joyas y hasta intrumentos musicales andinos. También los sábados, muchos visitantes llegan temprano en la mañana al mercado de animales, donde hay desde llamas hasta caballos y perros. Este mercado se localiza a la salida de Otavalo y puede ser visitado antes del mercado artesanal. También es posible visitar el mercado de alimentos y enseres del hogar (homegoods) que se encuentra mu cerca del artesanal. Otavalo está a dos horas al norte de Quito, en la región andina, a una altitud de 2.500 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Su población es de alrededor de 40.000 habitantes. The world-renowned Saturday handicraft market in Otavalo, is one of the most famous markets in the Andean region. The indigenous weavers that live in the towns around Otavalo are among the most talented in Ecuador. Otavaleños, ingeniouses to adapt their products to the demands of the market, have gained not only international recognition, but also prosperity. The Saturday handicraft market is the largest and most famous in Ecuador, but on any day of the week it is possible to shop in the labyrinthine handicraft market in the Plaza de los Ponchos. Among the most important articles include exquisite woven fabrics, wool ponchos, hats, hand-woven sweaters, blankets, scarves, jewelry, and even Andean musical instruments.
Also on Saturdays, many visitors arrive early in the morning to the animal market, where there are animals from llamas to horses and dogs. This market is located just outside of Otavalo and it can be visited before the handicraft market. As well, it is possible to visit the food and home goods market that is found very close to the handicraft market.
Otavalo is two hours north of Quito, in the Andean region, at an altitude of 2,500 meters above sea level. Its population is around 40,000 people.
