Why did some American soldiers defect and join the Filipino insurgents?

They were encouraged to with propaganda about blacks being oppressed in the USA and the USA oppressing another people of color (the Filipinos). They were promised positions of power. It didn't help that many people in general already viewed the war as unjust. Fifteen soldiers in total defected.
